Calico is a new game under development by CatBean Games which tasks you with the project of rebuilding the town’s cat café and fill it with cute and cuddly creatures. Calico is essentially a day-in-the-life community sim game and it looks very cute. Players will journey to a small village filled with magical girls and take over the local cat café and set it up.
Players will able to build up the café by filling it with new furniture, decorations, pastries and most importantly new animals that are found in the surrounding areas of the café. Players will play the game as one of the magical girls which include Heartgirl and Flowergirl. Both of them can be picked at the start of the game and will be your main character throughout your cat café journey.
The game takes inspiration from games such as Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing however there are no negative consequences in Calico. Animals will stay alive always, shops never close and the crops never rot in the game giving players more freedom to enjoy the game at their own pace and play around with all sorts of cuddly critters.
To find new animals, players can explore the world of Calico. The world around the cat café is full of cats, raccoons, dogs, turtles, red pandas, foxes, deer, and many other animals. All of the animals can be befriended and are interactable. Players will be able to name them, make them follow or send them to the café.
According to the official description of the game, animal AI will have the following personality traits:
- Happiness, trust, and energy levels
- How active, lazy, or hungry they are
- How close they like to be to the player
- Do they like being picked up?
- Do they listen to player commands?
- What other animals do they like as friends
- What’s their favorite toy?
- Unique actions exclusive to specific animals And more!
The game features a decent sized island which has six different environmental areas. The cat café sits in the middle of the island. Players can decorate their café with tons of unique decorative items. Items include furniture, toys, planters, and many other cool things. The final version of the game will feature a detailed customization system.
The café will also serve the customers so players can also create items such as baked goods and drinks. All items will be for sale and displayed in the store whether they are eatables or drinks. Players can also create a drink menu or food displays in their café. Some of these options will also be customizable. This will allow players to earn in-game currency and spend the money to make the café even better with new furniture and toys for the animals.
The town in Calico will also feature a potion shop which will sell different unique potions for the player to use. These potions will help players alter the animals and the game. For example, there is a potion in the game which will make animals huge and players can then ride them around the world of Calico.
